Your handpan is a precision instrument. The steel it's made from is responsive, resonant — and sensitive to moisture, fingerprints, and neglect. A consistent care routine takes minutes and protects years of tone quality.
This guide covers everything you need to keep your handpan in excellent condition, whether you've just received your first instrument or you've been playing for years.
Why Handpan Care Matters
Handpans are hand-tuned from nitrided or stainless steel. While nitrided steel is particularly vulnerable to rust if left untreated, even stainless instruments benefit from regular maintenance. The oils from your hands, combined with humidity and temperature changes, can degrade the surface over time.
The good news: a simple routine is all it takes.
After Every Session: Wipe Down Your Handpan
The single most important habit is wiping your handpan after every playing session.
Use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove fingerprints and moisture from the entire surface — top shell, bottom shell, and the Gu (the central hole). Pay attention to the tone fields and the area around the port.

Weekly or Monthly: Apply Handpan Care Oil
Every few weeks — or more frequently in humid climates or during summer — apply a thin layer of handpan-specific oil to protect the steel.
How to apply:
- Ensure the surface is clean and dry
- Apply a small amount of oil to a clean cloth (not directly to the instrument)
- Work it in using gentle circular motions across the entire surface
- Buff off any excess with a dry cloth

- Avoid direct sunlight — UV exposure and heat can affect tuning stability over time
- Use a quality bag or case — always store your handpan in a padded bag when not in use
- Control humidity — if you live in a particularly damp environment, consider a small silica gel pack inside your bag
- Don't leave it in a car — temperature extremes are hard on the steel and the tuning
Travelling With Your Handpan
If you're taking your instrument to sessions, workshops, or festivals, a few extra precautions help:
- Wipe down thoroughly before packing
- Apply a light coat of oil before longer trips
- Check for any surface marks or early rust spots when you arrive

Spotting Early Rust
Even with good care, rust spots can appear — especially on nitrided steel in humid conditions. If you catch them early, they're manageable:

- Do not use abrasive materials or steel wool
